YouTube brings new feature to help parents ‘supervise’ what their kids watch – Times of India
As a platform, YouTube has required a minimum age of 13 for anyone to use it. For people below that age, the company recommends use of YouTube Kids, which is a dedicated app built with simple curated content for kids.
In its latest announcement, YouTube has said that in the coming months, it will launch a new support for parents to allow their children to access YouTube through a supervised Google Account. their children to access YouTube through a supervised Google Account.
Parents will be given three different content settings on YouTube to choose from:
Explore | This setting will be suitable for children ready to move on from YouTube Kids and explore content on YouTube. It is suitable for for viewers ages 9 and above, as per YouTube, Parents will be able to find vlogs, tutorials, gaming videos, music clips, news, educational content and more under this option. |
Explore More | This setting will come with more larger set to videos and will be suitable for kids above 13 years of age. This setting will allow kids to see live stream as well. |
Most of YouTube | As the name suggests, this setting will enable users to see almost all videos on YouTube, except for age-restricted content. Also, it includes sensitive topics that may only be appropriate for older teens. |
YouTube says that this support was designed for parents who think their children are ready to explore the vast universe of YouTube videos.
“We will use a mix of user input, machine learning and human review to determine which videos are included” said YouTube in a blog post.
Besides choosing the content settings for their kids, parents will also be able to manage watch and search history from within their child’s account settings. Another noteworthy thing that YouTube will be rolling out is that it won’t be showing personalised ads in “certain categories.”
“At launch, we’ll also disable in-app purchases, as well as creation and comments features,” added YouTube.
