Instant messaging app WhatsApp was born on February 24, 2009. The platform recently turned 12 and took to microblogging site Twitter to announce the same.
In a congratulatory message on Twitter, the Facebook-owned company shared key insights like number of global users, data on number of WhatsApp calls and more.
Stating that WhatsApp has more than two billion users globally, the post revealed that nearly 100 billion WhatsApp messages are sent each month. It goes on to say that more than one billion calls are made using WhatsApp each day.

WhatsApp also took the opportunity to reinstate its commitment towards protecting user;s privacy. “We are and will continue to be committed to your privacy with end-to-end encryption. Always and forever”, WhatsApp wrote in the Twitter post.
Whatsapp has faced backlash after the company introduced its new privacy terms this year. The new policy raises concerns over user’s data privacy as it allows deeper integration of WhatsApp with Facebook. To recall, WhatsApp was bought by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion.
The deadline for accepting WhatsApp’s new policy was January 15. After facing criticism, the company extended the deadline to May 15. WhatsApp has constantly denied all allegations related to its new user policy and has termed them as ‘misinformation’.
