Instant messaging app WhatsApp is said to be working on increasing the security of chat backups.
As per a tweet by WABetaInfo, the Facebook-owned app is working on encrypting chat backups, as a result of which, only users will be able to access them.
The tweet from the WABetaInfo includes screenshots that read, ”To prevent unauthorised ed access to your iCloud Drive backup, you can set a password that will be used to encrypt future backups.”
This password will be used to encrypt future backups.
After this, the password will be required when users restore the backup.

The app will then ask users to confirm their phone number, and choose a password that’s at least eight characters long. WhatsApp also warns that it will not be able to help recover forgotten passwords.
While WhatsApp provided end-to-end encryption for chats, which means that they are visible only to sender and receiver, but it doesn’t extend to chat backups.
The responsibility of keeping backups secure lies on Google and Apple as backups are stored in Google Drive and Apple iCloud.
It remains to be seen when WhatsApp rolls out this feature.
