Europe grappled with resurgent coronavirus infections on Sunday, as Germany considered extending restrictions into April despite street protests.
Thousands of protesters angry at Covid curbs rallied in cities across Europe over the weekend, even as several nations reimposed partial lockdowns to fight new surges.
A memo from several of Germany’s regions said the country’s partial lockdown should be extended into April because of rising infection rates driven by variants. Quarantines and negative tests are must for those re-entering Germany, the memo warned. The prospect of further curbs will infuriate the thousands who marched against existing restrictions in the city of Kassel on Saturday. Police there used water cannons, batons and pepper spray to disperse the crowds, which they estimated to number up to 20,000.
Protesters also marched in Amsterdam, Vienna, the Bulgarian capital Sofia, and Switzerland over the weekend. The coronavirus, which has killed more than 2.7 million people, has been spreading faster recently, with new infections up globally by 14% in the last week, according to AFP data.
In Italy, thousands of parents, kids and teachers protested in towns across the country on Sunday against what they call the unnecessary closure of schools to curb infections. Meanwhile, over 27.6 million people in Britain, well over half the adult population, have received at least one dose of a vaccine, official data showed on Sunday, after a daily record of 844,285 doses were administered the previous day.
