HYDERABAD: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa drubbed Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia 21-18, 21-10 in the Swiss Open BWF Super-300 tournament in Basel, late on Tuesday.
The other Indian doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki Reddy suffered a straight-game loss against third seeds Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England 18-21, 15-21.
This is the second straight victory for the unseeded Indian pair of Satwik-Ashwini against the second-seeded Indonesians. The Indians, who entered into the top-20 of world rankings recently, had stunned Hafiz-Gloria at the Asia leg tournament in Thailand in January.
On Tuesday too, the Indians looked in great touch as they dominated the world No.8 pair. In the first set, it was a see-saw battle until 16-16 before the Indians scored the big points to move to 20-17.
In the second, the Indians dominated from the start. They secured a 5-1 lead and went into the break at 11-6 before winning the game at 21-10.
In the second round, they will meet Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia, who defeated Ties Van Der Lecq and Debore Jille of the Netherlands 21-13, 21-15.
This will be the first meeting between Satwik-Ashwini and Pitha-Rinov.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian squad will take the court on Wednesday.
