Oscars 2021: Priyanka Chopra’s ‘The White Tiger’, Surya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’, Nila Madhab Panda’s ‘Kalira Atita’ among 366 films eligible for Best Picture Academy Award – Times of India
Among the 366 feature films are three Indian films that are in the running for an Oscar nomination. The Priyanka Chopra and Rajkummar Rao starrer ‘The White Tiger’, Suriya’s film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and Nila Madhab Panda’s film on climate change ‘Kalira Atita’ are still in the race to clench Oscar glory.
According to a statement put up on the Academy’s official site, to be eligible for consideration for the 93rd Academy Awards, feature films that opened in a commercial motion picture theatre in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas (Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia) by February 28, 2021, and completed a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue will be considered. Owing to the pandemic, films that intended for theatrical release but were made available through commercial streaming, VOD service or other broadcasts may also qualify if the film is made available on the secure Academy Screening Room member site within 60 days of the streaming/VOD release or broadcast.
The feature films must also have a running time of more than 40 minutes.
While India will be rooting for the three films, it must be noted that the road to securing a nod is still weeks away. The official nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, March 15, 2021.
To secure a nod, the film will have to go up against favourites including, ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’, ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’, ‘Malcolm & Marie’, ‘Mank’, ‘Tenet’, ‘Soul’, ‘Sound Of Metal’ among other films that have been among the top contenders at the ongoing awards season.
