India vs England: Captain Virat Kohli on the verge of overtaking Ricky Ponting on this milestone list | Cricket News – Times of India
With the four Test series vs England getting underway, Kohli now has the chance to overtake Ricky Ponting on an illustrious list.
Kohli needs just one century to claim the sole record of scoring the most number of international centuries (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is combined) as captain.
Kohli has 41 international centuries to his name currently and shares the top spot on the list with Australian great Ricky Ponting who finished his career with 41 tons as skipper under his belt.
Thanks to Kohli being an extremely prolific run scorer, his matches taken per 100 count is also the best among at least the top 6. So far in his career, Kohli has scored a century in approximately every 4.59 match as captain. He has played a total of 423 international matches so far and captained India in 188 of them.
Kohli has so far notched up 41 international tons as captain in 189 matches. Ponting took 324 matches to hit 41 centuries while leading the Australian team.
South Africa’s Graeme Smith is third on the list with 33 international centuries in 286 matches in charge as captain.
The fourth and fifth spots belong to two Australians – Steve Smith and Michael Clarke. Smith has 20 international centuries in 93 matches so far as captain, while Clarke smashed 19 in 139 matches while captaining Australia.
West Indies’ great Brian Lara holds the sixth position on the list with 19 international centuries in 172 matches as skipper.
