First project to map genomes in Indian Ocean | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: In a week, 30 scientists will embark on a threemonth expedition for the first project to map the genomes of single-celled organisms in Indian Ocean.
Starting March10, the CSIRNational Institute of Oceanography project will be launched from Visakhapatnam, going up to 30°S, touching the waters between Australia and Maldives, and then circling back to Goa, covering 9,000 nautical miles by May. In this time, scientists will collect samples of water, sediment, plankton and other organisms up to 6km deep in the ocean. They will use next-generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing techniques to extract genetic information of organisms they come across.
