Elon Musk’s tweet paraphrases a line from Bhagavad Gita – Times of India
“I am become meme, destroyer of shorts”, referring to how the popularity and hence the proliferation of memes has spelled the death knell of shorts. The wordplay is somewhat similar to Lord Krishna’s in Gita. During Mahabharata, while persuading Pandava prince Arjun to persuade to take up his duty and go to war against the Kauravas. Lord Krishna is believed to have said, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”.

The tweet is said to be based on GameStop where a group of Redditors managed to fool WallStreet. As for Musk’s connection here, when tweets, people take notice (ask WhatsApp and Signal). His one-word tweet sent GameStop’s price soaring further.

The same line from the Bhagavad Gita was also reportedly quoted by Robert J Oppenheimer, a world-renowned physicist. Oppenheimer led the research done under the Manhattan Project for the USA and helped build the first atom bomb during the Second World War. He is said to have used these lines as he witnessed the first detonation of the nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945.
