Election Commission removes West Bengal DGP Virendra, appoints P Nirajnayan in his place | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered the removal of Virendra as the Director General of Police of poll-bound West Bengal with immediate effect.
He has been replaced by P Nirajnayan (IPS: 1987) as DG and IGP of the state. The decision was taken after reviewing the poll preparedness in the state.
According to the PTI sources, the move came in the wake of several political parties complaining to the Election Commission, alleging that Virendra was inclined towards the ruling Trinamool Congress.
EC to chief secretary while ordering the removal of the DGP said, “Virendra should not be given any post which directly or indirectly relates to conduct of the election.”

EC said compliance with the commission’s order may be done immediately. “Kindly inform the commission about the compliance latest by 10.00 am tomorrow (Wednesday),” the letter said.
The eight-phase assembly elections in West Bengal will begin on March 27 and will conclude on April 29.
