23 inmates of T’gana old-age home stage a miraculous recovery | India News – Times of India
HYDERABAD: For 24 inmates of an old-age home in Kondapur, a suburb of Hyderabad, it was a matter of life and death in August 2020. The coronavirus pandemic was at its peak and positive cases were spiralling. And all the 24 inmates — in the age group of 65-104 years — were Covid-19 positive.
As Telangana marked one year of the pandemic (the first case was detected on March 2, 2020) on Tuesday, 23 of those inmates are breathing easy and have returned to normal life. “Except for 104-year-old Paruchuru Ramaswamy who passed away on February 6, all the others are fit and able to get on with their lives,” said Dr K Rajini, who takes care of the elderly at the CR Foundation Home.
In the old-age home, the most heart-warming story was of Ramaswamy and his 67-year-old daughter Jamuna. After Ramaswamy joined the old-age home, Jamuna too followed him so that she could be with him. Ramaswamy was among those who were infected first and then Jamuna also tested positive. Both, however, recovered. Unfortunately, Ramaswamy succumbed to a mild illness on February 6. “My father was very strong. He interacted with his granddaughter a few days before he died. He remained optimistic till he breathed his last,” she said.
The state saw11,686 people in the age group of 61+ testing positive in the last one year, but the story of the 23 elderly people combating the virus successfully and springing back to life is nothing short of a miracle. “Life is a great leveller. My fight with Covid is the source of many a heartening tale,” said a 94-year-old man who beat the virus.
